"Preserve the Romance" - Season 05, Episode 01

- by Karen

The baby comes home to Portwenn. But not before the entire village forms a parade to the hospital to pay Louisa, the Doc and new baby a visit. Doc and Louisa escape before the villagers have a chance to make a scene - but they can't outfox PC Penhale. He finds them before they (gasp!) commit a felony.

In any case, the town gets their way by following them home and having a quick look at the little fella before Al shoves them off so the Doc and Louisa can have some space. There's lots to be done, too. A crib needs to be built, nappies need to be purchased, and the Doc needs to ask politely if he can spend the night with at Louisa's. After all, the new doctor has arrived in Portwenn so he's basically homeless.

PC Penhale discovers an abnormality while in the shower and decides he'd rather talk to the Doc about his problem than the new doctor. Mostly because he and the Doc 'have a history' and the new doctor is, well, female. He gets his way eventually by luring the Doc into the public toilets for a check up. Is it an awkward moment when Nigel walks in and PC's pants are around his ankles and the Doc is eye-level with PC's bits? Nah.

And there's sad news in the village: Auntie Joan suffered a heart attack while driving on Bodmin Moor. She didn't survive and now Martin has even more obstacles standing in the way of his London future.
Oh yeah, and he's got Buddy now, too.

The new doctor, Di (Diana) Dibbs, is getting settled in at the surgery. Her husband is the new practice manager, so Pauline has mysteriously disappeared from Portwenn. Of course there are a few people waiting to see the new doctor before the surgery officially re-opens. I mean, it's Portwenn... when does anyone follow rules or schedules? She seems a bit out of her element, though, and the Doc wastes no time sniffing out her insecurities and lack of knowledge. Di is passing out new prescriptions like lollipops and when the Doc shows up to confront her, she makes a run for it by climbing out the back window.

It's transition time in Portwenn - we've got the usual kerfuffles, pseudo stretch marks, Rob Petrie pajamas, dropped trou in the men's restroom (no toe-tapping politicians involved), baby head-sniffing, and an irritated perineum - physically explained by our dear Doc in the town market so all the village understands exactly where it is located on the human body.

Get ready for Season 5... Preserve the Romance. Enjoy!

  1. The "matchmaker" was named Mrs. Black in the "Gentlemen Prefer" episode. I thought Mrs. Dibbs looked familiar.

I couldn't understand why the doc acted so agitated and snapped at everyone for no reason in this series. There were no tender moments like with Elaine and Mandy.

But while I was visiting Mom over Christmas, she straightened me out. She raised one eyebrow and gave me the "funky eye" and said, "It's obvious that you're never had kids!" I guess she's right, lack of sleep can have a terrible effect on the nerves after awhile!
