"Tick Tock (The Apple Doesn't Fall)" - Season 03, Episode 01

- by Karen Haviley

This looks like a good start to Season 3, no?

Not to burst your bubble, but this is about as close as they get to any kind of intimacy in this episode. Again.

Meanwhile, we get to meet the new policeman in town: PC Joseph Penhale. He has a couple of issues from the start giving you a little insight that in Portwenn... he’ll fit right in.

A young girl in town is suffering from - as diagnosed by the Doc - ACS (Annoying Child Syndrome). Or maybe it was NCS? (I’ll let you figure that one out.) In any case, she’s jumping on cars, riding around on the back of pick up trucks and flatbeds until she gets ‘dropped off’ at the corner store. Her mom begged for meds to help but decided to help herself to PC Penhale’s prescription the Doc left on Pauline’s desk.

Al is out exploring the world and now Bert is feeling depressed. Or Bipolar. He’s not quite sure, but something definitely needs changing in his life. He comes to discuss it with the Doc who gets his say on what he thinks Bert's problem might be. Good thing his remarks weren't offensive.... In any case, Bert just lets it roll of his back and you get the feeling that he has a few ideas up his sleeve to shake things up. And we can't wait to find out!

Pauline is given an opportunity to expand her position at the surgery. A new job that will hopefully help the Doc keep his lunch down each day. She can’t wait to start -- and can’t wait for a raise. But we get another glimpse of what she might be spending her money on these days.

It’s all in a days work in Portwenn. The sun, the surf, the surgery, the ever growing sexual tension between the Doc and Louisa...  Wait. Can you hear it? Yep, folks it’s the Tick Tock of someone’s clock (and it's definitely not ours!).

Enjoy the episode!

TRIVIA QUESTION: What do the initials/credentials after the Doc's name stand for?

  1. Karen made a good point in the last show. Both Louisa and Aunt Joan don’t appreciate the Doc’s professionalism when he treats them like “one of his patients.” In Louisa’s case, however, his detachment is more frustrating because she especially wants him to be emotional when it comes to her. In a way the scene in his office sets up the later scene after Allison left very well. She couldn’t stand it any longer and finally gets a somewhat emotional response from the Doc when she voices her concerns about her life.
That was an interesting discussion when Linda talked about animals on the set in general and about Tai the Elephant in particular. I love animals but I tend to believe they belong outside. I used to do remodeling jobs and I was always amazed at the way people would let their pets totally ruin their furniture and all their belongings that they worked so hard to pay for. I love Louisa and I love my friends at Rock the Doc Podcast!

  3. There's some thing extra in the pregnancy conversation in the surgery. When Doc asks Louisa if she could be pregnant, she obviously responds, "How could I be pregnant" because she and Martin haven't done it. However, Martin's quick, "Good", tells me he's relieved because until then he didn't know how far her relationship with Danny, a short while ago in Portwenn time, went.

About the titles, for some weird reason the North American DVD's distributed by Acorn for S3 came out with different episode titles than that original British ones. That's the only series in which they changed all the names. I don't know why. What's interesting is that in this first ep, I prefer the new title. Think about it. Everyone is talking to Louisa about babies, Joe, Bert, and when she comes to Martin in that last scene, in which he's working on a clock, she's clearly telling him that her biological clock is ticking.

There's another episode, later in this series, in which the episode title change mucks things up, obscures something really important, but we'll get to that later.
