"Always on My Mind" - Season 02, Episode 05

- by Karen Haviley

And this week in Portwenn...

The Doc gets a call from Phil Pratt about his wife not being able to get out of bed. He shows up and while he’s berating Phil’s wife, Helen, about why she should be coming into the surgery and not waiting until she’s feeling so poorly that she can’t get out of bed... she has a stroke and dies. Unfortunately, Auntie Joan, who is a neighbor and good friend of Helen’s, walks in to witness it happen.
The woman’s husband doesn’t take it so well, as you can imagine. Phil orders the Doc and Joan out of his house. But that’s not enough. Phil thinks Joan is aware of the situation between he and his late wife, so he acts out by taunting and threatening her. She does know about his affair. However, only at the end when his lover shows up, after Phil is somewhat impaled by a farming device, do we understand his desperate angst to keep his affair secret.

The Doc is on yet another call at the school to remove a bone from a boys throat and he meets the new teacher, Tricia, who’s definitely a bit off. She needs some medical help of her own for a condition that’s developed on her hands but the Doc demands that she make an appointment at the surgery. While Louisa and Doc are shouting at each other (once again) the Doc makes a comment most revealing about why he thinks they can’t have normal conversation. So they decide they need to have a good long chat about what’s happening, or not happening, between them.

Yes, folks. The Doc and Louisa have an actual date!
I know, I know... it can’t be that simple. And you’d be right. Again.

In the meantime, Pauline signs up to join the Portwenn Lifeboat crew and gets accepted. She succeeds at making Al jealous in the process thanks to a little flirting between her and the surfer that grew breasts (in the series Pilot), Ross. His breasts are gone now and Pauline is his next conquest thanks to her feminine wiles.

PC Mylow is getting a bit more serious with Julie, too. A few are a bit suspicious of her. But poor Mark just can’t see past her charm and, well, the sex.

The teacher finally shows up at the Doc’s surgery and informs him that yes, he was right, she does have severe OCD. Unfortunately, she chose that exact moment when the Doc is on his way out to meet Louisa at the bar for their date, err, conversation, and Tricia can’t leave the surgery until the half hour or hour (thanks to her OCD).

So there Louisa waits on the patio facing the sea... with a bottle of wine and two glasses. Waiting... and waiting... for Martin.
It won’t go to waste, though. Danny is there. Danny is always there.
And Louisa has decided that the wait for the Doc... is over.

What a week in Portwenn. Some people are getting together... and some people are just saying goodbye. I can almost hear Willie Nelson singing in the background, can’t you?

Doc fans... grab a listen to Always on My Mind....
