"Cats and Sharks" - Season 05, Episode 07

- by Karen

Well, Bert's in deep. He borrowed money from the loan shark and owes 1000 quid, plus interest, and he has no way to pay it. Al finds out what's been going on indirectly and wants nothing to do with it. Except when Aunt Ruth hands him an envelope with £800 for some fence work that needs to be done at the farm. He'll have to work it out somehow - either with the sharks... or Aunt Ruth. Bert and Al want to stand up 'like men' to these thugs to avoid paying. But maybe they need some backup in case these men don't like them... you know... acting like men. Enter PC Penhale.

Local philanthropist, Mrs. Dingle, is having some problems with the Portwenn Cat Sanctuary. Like Bert, she's in the red and borrowing money from the local sharks. Her problem however is not so much the money but the fact that she keeps falling down. Because she uses her bicycle to get around, you can see how this is a problem.

Louisa's mother, Eleanor, is subcontracting her babysitting duties with one of the local girls who's wearing an ankle monitor attached by the local police. She has her reasons: she's busy helping Bert try to raise some extra money for the restaurant. Eleanor suggests a Spanish theme night and it's a big hit with the locals. Unfortunately...

...just before the event, Eleanor is feeling under the weather. So much so that her illness actually requires emergency surgery performed by the Doc... with assistance from Morwenna...who's feeling confident and offers to stitch Eleanor back up if the Doc will talk her through it.

The Doc and Louisa are still living apart and he's planning to leave the following week for London leaving Louisa and James in Portwenn. It's clear he's torn, but he's also too stubborn to admit it. And the tension continues to build. There's only one episode left - will he stay or will he go?

But something very peculiar is happening with Mrs. Tishell. She's a bit more bold with the Doc lately and she's not quite herself...

This week we get to enjoy bumps popping out of everywhere: hives, fleas and hernias; local tapas and cheap sangria; and an increase in testosterone for several male residents - if only for a moment.

Enjoy Portwenn's game of Cats and Sharks...

"Don't Let Go" - Season 05, Episode 06

- by Karen

This is a rough one. The people of Portwenn just aren't gettin' along.

PC Penhale's ex-wife, Maggie, is still in town. Her memory has returned which means she's ready to leave Portwenn, but Joe isn't ready to let her go. Strangely enough, she's conflicted about leaving, too. He decides he has to try to prove to her he's a changed man - stronger and more forceful - so she'll stick around. And if he didn't have to pay people to help him prove he's a bolder man, it may have just worked.

Louisa's having a tough time at school. The students and teachers are back from holidays and the kids are more unruly than normal. On top of that, the school's caretaker is acting strange and being forgetful. So forgetful, in fact, he ends up on the roof unable to climb down. Luckily the Doc swoops in to save the day. He has to...PC Penhale, we learn, is a afraid of heights. The Doc also knows just how to handle these folks. It's a bit physical, but seems to work often enough.

The Doc and Louisa are at it again. They can't seem to agree on anything. The Doc makes arrangements for James without Louisa's involvement for the last time. She learns that he's already scheduled the Christening without telling her and that's the last straw. She realizes she has no idea how any of this is going to work and leaves with James Henry. The Doc is trying to pretend he's not affected by this latest blow-up, but it's hard to escape the ticking of the clock.

Awaiting you this week is tongue-licking, more face slapping, kill zones, a shortcut to Bert's, the new tea-painting effect, cracked masks soaked in wine, and finger sharpening.
Jump in and Don't Let Go....  Enjoy!

"Remember Me" - Season 05, Episode 05

- by Karen

PC Penhale's ex-wife, Maggie, visits Portwenn. It's not what you think ~ unless you think she comes back with a case of amnesia and thinks she's still married to Joe. Then you'd be right. It's difficult for Joe because he still loves her and he's torn between keeping her to himself for a day or getting her some medical help. Love will do that to ya. Well, if you're PC Penhale, anyway. Hard to hide a person in love with PC in Portwenn so getting medical help prevails.

The baby's name is now up for serious discussion - because they have only a few days to decide. Louisa wants James; the Doc want's Henry. Hmm.. which will he choose? That's right, the Doc makes the final decision. Just like he made the final decision for the paint color in their new London apartment. Louisa can't decide whether to be happy he took the initiative or be angry that... he took the initiative. He doesn't seem to understand that Louisa wants some say in matters dealing with their new family. He'll learn fast enough. All men do, right?

Meanwhile, Al and Aunt Ruth seem to be getting closer - or at least Al is feeling comfortable enough to share some issues he's having with his dad. Bert is dancing around the idea of borrowing money from a loan shark. He doesn't want Al to think he can't run the restaurant on his own, but bills need to be paid and the bank is calling. He tried to sell off a few things but to no avail. In the end, Bert takes the bait so get ready for a bumpy ride.

This episode brings us more fainting, a (almost) police house-quickie (if the station is a rockin'...), a titillating chess match (who knew?!), a serious case of acute generitis, and, of course, Boris.

Enjoy Remember Me...

"Mother Knows Best" - Season 05, Episode 04

- by Karen

Louisa's mother, Eleanor, swings by Portwenn -- unannounced and uninvited. That sits well with two new parents who are struggling to find their rhythm and in dire need of sleep. It's clear there's some tension between Louisa and her mum. Most likely due to her mother leaving when she was 11 years old. Eleanor's been in Portwenn before, though, and has some old friends still in town... like Mrs. Tishell. Okay, well maybe friends is the wrong word...

There's a Fun Run in town and PC Penhale is leading the charge raising donations and making sure everyone knows the marathon route. Never mind that there are some folks in Portwenn who could probably do with some (months of) training before the big day. Proven by the collapse of a villager on prep day. Nothing that a couple of brewskis the night before can't fix.

Bert's getting the restaurant ready and lining up some event day specials. But he's got to make a profit on the do-gooders coming to town, so he can only stretch the menu so far. And he's got a bit of a situation with Mark from The Crab restaurant. Mark's trying to make a buck, too, but Bert senses he's up to something dodgey. This *must* be investigated. He'll of course need some assistance, and since he's been waiting for some real crime action in the village, PC Penhale's all-in. Unfortunately, the Doc had to rescue them, but it was a busy day for Joe just the same.

Mrs. Tishell (and her pink boa) takes the crazy up a notch, inappropriate police uniforms, dislodged testicles, Voodoo shops, alcoholic breast milk, and life realizations after being locked up for days minutes in the The Crab's cooler... the little town of Portwenn definitely does not disappoint.

Belly-up to the bar folks because Mother Knows Best... Enjoy!
