"Born with a Shotgun" - Season 05, Episode 03

- by Karen

The baby is keeping the Doc and Louisa up every night - as babies usually do. They're trying to get into the swing of things but it's taking some time to find their groove. And they're willing to try all sorts of maneuvers to get the little one to sleep.

Bert is suffering from a touch of vertigo and is having a hard time with both of the methods the Doc has given him to help. Mainly because he's not doing any of them.

Aunt Ruth is having trouble with the neighbor's son. He decided to help himself to the hubcaps off her Merc right in front of her. When she goes to investigate and speak to his mother, she realizes the son's not the only one with problems. When the Doc and PC Penhale stop by to check things out, PC Joe takes over hostage negotiations. Yeah. Go ahead and think on that for awhile.

Morwenna is trying to get to work on time but wanting is just not enough. Her granddad tries to help her out with a few 'energy pills' until she can get a new alarm clock but now she's bouncing off the walls making cake for patients, cleaning pots and pans and straightening the front office magazines. Unfortunately, the Doc has no patience for excuses and has to sack his new receptionist.

An interesting episode with lots of twists and turns, arsenic wallpaper, a couple rounds of 'stir the baby', 3rd base coach signals, the truth about rabbits, and boys with dark thoughts.

Enjoy Born with a Shotgun...

"Dry Your Tears" - Season 05, Episode 02

- by Karen

It's Auntie Joan's funeral and the town has come together to pay their respects. But it's Portwenn, so it's filled with delightful situations all around. They nearly drop the casket on the way in to the church, the Doc gives a moving eulogy...about the causes of Joan's death and medical statistics of heart disease in England, the baby is having a fit and PC Penhale gets a call on his radio during the ceremony. It's just the way Joan would have wanted - or at least expected - it to be.

Martin's Aunt Ruth has come to the village to attend the funeral. She's a psychiatrist at Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital and it's more than clear that she and Martin are cut from the same cloth. It also looks like she has some health issues she doesn't want to speak about. Ruth thought it would be a quick trip to Portwenn, however, Martin informs her that Joan has left her the farm. It's a lot to take in and luckily Al has offered his assistance until she can figure out what to do with the property. Al and Bert can use the extra money, too, so as long as Bert can get over his jealousy about sharing Al, they're good.

Louisa, Martin and the baby have moved into the surgery to make things easier for Martin since he's back to work as the town GP. One of his patients is Harry, the undertaker's son who while helping to carry Joan's coffin, nearly took it down when his back gave out. The Doc suspects something's not right when he accidentally trips over him and breaks the young man's leg. It just takes a visit to his house after Harry passes a kidney stone to see exactly what's going on with this young chap.

Since Pauline won't be back anytime soon, and the Doc has (practically) fired Louisa from managing the front office, we might just have a new receptionist - Morwenna. She's worked in medical - she was working with Mrs. Tishell just the day before. So that must count for experience, right?

Things are a mess as usual. There's problems to solutions (and vice versa), a rendition of cat-on-the-organ, droopy cows, young boys addicted to playing with 'their things', Bert's homemade pigswill, toothpaste tube etiquette, and new tanning beds in Portwenn.

Enjoy Dry Your Tears...

"Preserve the Romance" - Season 05, Episode 01

- by Karen

The baby comes home to Portwenn. But not before the entire village forms a parade to the hospital to pay Louisa, the Doc and new baby a visit. Doc and Louisa escape before the villagers have a chance to make a scene - but they can't outfox PC Penhale. He finds them before they (gasp!) commit a felony.

In any case, the town gets their way by following them home and having a quick look at the little fella before Al shoves them off so the Doc and Louisa can have some space. There's lots to be done, too. A crib needs to be built, nappies need to be purchased, and the Doc needs to ask politely if he can spend the night with at Louisa's. After all, the new doctor has arrived in Portwenn so he's basically homeless.

PC Penhale discovers an abnormality while in the shower and decides he'd rather talk to the Doc about his problem than the new doctor. Mostly because he and the Doc 'have a history' and the new doctor is, well, female. He gets his way eventually by luring the Doc into the public toilets for a check up. Is it an awkward moment when Nigel walks in and PC's pants are around his ankles and the Doc is eye-level with PC's bits? Nah.

And there's sad news in the village: Auntie Joan suffered a heart attack while driving on Bodmin Moor. She didn't survive and now Martin has even more obstacles standing in the way of his London future.
Oh yeah, and he's got Buddy now, too.

The new doctor, Di (Diana) Dibbs, is getting settled in at the surgery. Her husband is the new practice manager, so Pauline has mysteriously disappeared from Portwenn. Of course there are a few people waiting to see the new doctor before the surgery officially re-opens. I mean, it's Portwenn... when does anyone follow rules or schedules? She seems a bit out of her element, though, and the Doc wastes no time sniffing out her insecurities and lack of knowledge. Di is passing out new prescriptions like lollipops and when the Doc shows up to confront her, she makes a run for it by climbing out the back window.

It's transition time in Portwenn - we've got the usual kerfuffles, pseudo stretch marks, Rob Petrie pajamas, dropped trou in the men's restroom (no toe-tapping politicians involved), baby head-sniffing, and an irritated perineum - physically explained by our dear Doc in the town market so all the village understands exactly where it is located on the human body.

Get ready for Season 5... Preserve the Romance. Enjoy!

"The Wrong Goodbye" - Season 04, Episode 08

- by Karen

Bert and Al are making some extra cash on the side by selling their used frying oil to Tommy, the taxi driver, who's creating his own bio-fuel. It's Tommy's way of keeping fares low. The concept is good: Bert makes a little extra money, Tommy saves on gas... but that's pretty much where the good ideas end. Do they need to research how to make bio-fuels? Heck, no! Should they call in a chemical/environmental/bio-tech engineer for expert advice? They don't need no stinkin' engineers!

It's the Doc's last day and it's a busy one. The whole town's in line at the surgery for one last checkup with the Doc before he rides off into the sunset. During his lunch break he heads over to see Mrs. Tishell to pay the balance on his account. Lucky for the Doc, she's got a going away present for him that she made herself. You guessed it: a bright yellow jumper. The perfect wardrobe piece for kicking around Martin's new posh London neighborhood.

The day is winding down. As the Doc heads out of town, he has one final medical emergency at the Harbor Days Festival when one of the teachers "arteests", Tasha, collapses on stage. After administering some booze to the patient, he realizes that Louisa may be in danger. She's headed to her OB appointment in Truro and her taxi driver and this latest patient have something in common: they're married and have both been inhaling their homemade bio-fuel. He chases down the taxi and rescues both Tommy and Louisa who, after stopping by the closest bar to now administer booze to Tommy, goes into labor.

It's a happy ending to Series 4. The Doc finally tells Louisa he was wrong about everything and it sounds like he just might be sticking around Portwenn a little while longer...

Boy, Edith is gonna be pissed.

The population of Portween just increased by one. Are there more to come?

This week will keep you glued to your seat with stolen kisses in the pharmacy, a hand-holding fungus, Cricket balls (or are you just happy to see me?), whacked-out ganglions, "Bad Boy" Buddy, and redheads who won't take no for an answer (also known as the "It's not you, it's me" routine ~ for you Seinfeld fans out there).

Enjoy The Wrong Goodbye...

P.S. We forgot to mention at the end of the podcast that we figured out that Stewart was, in fact, the ranger and Antony was the squirrel. Glad that mystery is solved...
