The Doc makes a few mistakes that has the Portwennians ready to pack him up and ship him out. The town has a "case of the lurky" so between scaring a couple dozen kids out of the pool, going on the radio to tell the town to stop drinking Portwenn tap water -- all before actually having the water tested, mind you -- and lending an ear to a frustrated Bert, the Doc can't catch a break.
All is not lost, however, as the Doc and Luisa go out on their first date. Well.. sort of.
Enjoy the appropriately named Episode 3 - Sh*t Happens....

I heard you say that Al and Louisa are the "normal" people of the village. As you'll see, Louisa is FAR from well-adjusted and I'm surprised that you didn't even pick up on that during the conversation she had with Doc Martin by his car. She gets mad at the Doc for honestly and innocently summarizing exactly what she was saying; this is the first view we have that Louisa has issues, which she does. I hope you aren't going to be podcasters who see Doc as the whole problem and Louisa is some perfect woman. That's a very superficial viewing and I know you can do better than that! We see as the show progresses that Louisa feeds into their relationship problems from her own abandonment issues, tendencies to judge Martin poorly, her temper problems, and her lack of a sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment and thanks for listening to the podcast!
DeleteRegarding Al and Louisa - we just feel that they're the most 'normal' of the bunch in Portwenn... along with the Doc! They definitely all have their issues but they're not as quirky as the rest.
In any case, we love all the characters on the show! Great actors, great writing.. can't go wrong!
Because she was frustrated that the Doc didn't check on Roger Fenn in Gentlmen Prefer, we got the hint that Louisa was attracted to the Doc.This episode, Sh*t Happens, is when we first glimpse the admiration Doc has for Louisa.
ReplyDeleteIt is also telling that the Doc didn't rat out Bert as the source of the town's illness. Later, he is about to have a drink with Louisa but is interrupted on the balcony by PC Mylow. The way the Doc looks at Louisa when she graciously steps back inside to let them discuss Mark's "personal matter" says it all. He totally gets how sweet she is. It's a very touching way to end episode 3 of season 1. It certainly makes you want more.
Jeff, Its really nice to get a man's view on this. You are so right in everything you commented on. the Doc could have told everyone about Bert but he did not. He's learning as he goes. This is especially true with Steurt and Anthony. The show is done so well. They dont smack us over the head with dialog, they let things play out and I really like that. Great writing, directing, acting and ok everything!!!! It certainly does make you want more! Thanks for your post! We love our fans and we love the Doc!
ReplyDeleteWhen you wrote the Doc is, "learning as he goes," the lights went on. That's it! We know the Doc is socially inept, yet we also knows he has to deal with these people somehow. Every conflict is an opportunity to continue in his old ways or show some personal growth. Aside from the friction (or sexual tension) between him and Louisa, this adds tension, too. Is he going to blow it or grow, we wonder? It's interesting to watch his struggle, to watch him learn as he goes.
ReplyDeleteJeff, He may be socially inept and have no idea how to get and keep the prettiest girl in Portwenn but he is smart. We see that in his work. I really try to watch the show for the enjoyment of it. Certainly the lines that the Doc has are some of my favorite. I have friends who really take the story and characters apart and talk about why the writers did this and that. But I really just try to enjoy it. I like to see people and character for who they are just like in life. The show is written so well and produced so well. Its basic storytelling at its best. I'm can't wait for more!!! WE love our fans and we love the Doc!
